Welcome to Blackberry Farm, home of Lizzy’s Larder.
My husband Mike & I moved here in 1998 and in 2002 I opened Lizzy’s Larder because I was finding it hard to get local, high quality, traceable produce. So I tidied out the original meat larder by the farmhouse, made some cakes & preserves, picked some vegetables from the garden and invited local people to bring their goods to sell or barter. This little market was open for 2 hours every Saturday morning. It was so successful that the shop inevitably expanded and Lizzy's Larder was born. Now many local people supply my shop with a comprehensive range from cakes to crafts. (We have lots of plans so click on The future for more information)
Mike and I are predominantly sheep farmers with about 350 breeding ewes producing around 600 lambs per year. The lambs are sold through the shop and by mail order. We also have a small herd of pedigree Aberdeen Angus and Limousin cattle which we breed under the prefix “Koojan”. Our cattle produce beef exclusively for our shop and for boxes by mail order. We farm as organically as possible and do not use any chemical fertilisers, sprays or pesticides. This means not only can we produce an excellent natural product but we also have a very diverse range of wild flowers, birds and mammals on our farm.
We have a flock of chickens producing our own free range eggs. The majority of our chickens are general hybrid layers bred specifically for this purpose, but we also have Welsummers and Marans which produce dark brown eggs, Araucanas which lay blue/green eggs and a variety of other chickens including bantams all with their own unique characters. We also have call ducks and India Runner ducks who take free ranging to a new level! They are often to be found on the river or neighbouring lakes. We have Muscovy ducks and a gaggle of geese that produce eggs and meat for the shop.
In the Spring we often have orphan lambs which are bottle feed and we are very happy for visitors to help at feeding times. In June we take part in Open Farm Sunday (www.farmsunday.co.uk) and also take schools and local groups in for day trips. In October we open the farm as part of the Ruby Country Safari and everyone is invited to come and see what we do from pasture to plate and to really taste the difference. It is an entertaining and informative few days that are not to be missed. (Click on Events for more details)
